S.M.A.R.T. Goal Setting

As a cabinet member of the Epsilon Gamma Chapter, you have an important role in the day-to-day success of our fraternity. At the beginning of each semester and periodically throughout the year it is important that you set goals for your position, create a plan to help you achieve your goals and execute your plan. When making goals, it's important to follow the S.M.A.R.T. goal setting model.

For our purposes, the acronym S.M.A.R.T. will be defined in the following manner:

Specific

M

Measurable

A

Accountable

R

Realistic

T

Time Oriented

Specific: Must make sense and be clearly understood when it appears in written form.

Measurable: Quantitative number or measure attached to each goal so that members will know when it is achieved (e.g., 15 men in recruitment; raise $2,000; etc.)

Accountable: Clearly assigned. Someone must have the responsibility to see that it is achieved.

Realistic: The goal must be within reason yet one that pushes the chapter beyond its "comfort zone.“

Time Oriented: Set a date for achieving the goal. Be specific.

In other words, a SMART goal has a much greater chance of being accomplished than a general goal. To set a specific goal you must answer these questions:

Who: Who is involved?
What: What do I want to accomplish?
Where: Identify a location.
When: Establish a time frame.
Which: Identify requirements and constraints.
Why: Specific reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal.
How: Explain the process.

EXAMPLE:    A general goal would be, "Get in shape." But a specific goal would say, "Join a health club by February 1st; workout every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, lose 15 pounds by June 1st."
