814 S. Main - Continuous Improvement Project

By Phil Adler `98, EGHC Vice President

The capital improvement project at 814 S. Main is progressing very well. The second floor has been 99% completed allowing tenants to move into their rooms. All rooms now feature closets, cable and phone jacks in the wall, and drop ceilings with interconnected smoke detectors. The basement egress has been completed in the large room. Code enforcement hit us with a zinger while walking through the house. If we wanted to keep the basement rooms, we were required to install a sprinkler system in the furnace room as well as replace the furnace door with a solid core door and make a few other minor adjustments. These are currently being worked on.

The porch has a new railing that meets local codes. The pillar supporting the West most area of porch roof has been adjusted to provide appropriate support. The back door adjustment has been completed including the addition of the small deck up to the entrance.

All of the roofs have been completed. Matching shingles are located on each of the eaves and small roofs as well as the former tin porch roof. For the first time in fifteen years all of the shingles match! (Charcoal Gray) The final phase of this major renovation will take place this week as vinyl siding starts. It will be the same color “house gray” and feature siding style similar to the existing wood-work to keep the “look” to which we are  all accustomed.

This summer the house received a thorough cleaning and a fresh coat of paint on the first floor before the tenants moved in. A trend we hope to continue in the future. We instituted a check-in/check-out procedure this year to ensure accountability in our tenants. As always, the housing corporation is looking for volunteers to help in areas of lease management, continuous improvements project leaders, and members at large to help make important decisions regarding the physical structure of the house.

Hope to see you all at homecoming!

Photos from the renovation can be found on the main EGHC reports page.
