The Executive Committee was elected as follows: Scott Nadeau `89 - President Phil Klassen `09 - Vice President Jon Eadie `93 - Secretary John Reineke II `09 - Treasurer In other board elections, Jeff Wandzel `89 and Scott Sawyer `99 were reelected to three year terms. The EGHC would like to welcome Steve Desmet `94 to the board. As most of you know, Steve has been running the poker tournament at the golf outing for the past few years. He also recently joined the committee for our 25th Anniversary Banquet, so joining the board was a natural progression. The Housing Corporation would also like to thank outgoing board member Steve Grenus `88 for serving on the board for the past few years and for all of his dedication to the chapter over all of these years. Steve is currently working on location for Oracle in Kansas and his sage advice will be missed. In terms of the house itself, it still remains in excellent shape and shows very little wear from the $100K+ renovations that took place in 2005 and 2002. The rent we charge is still lower than other fraternity houses, and our facility is the best on campus. The chapter is in the process of renovating the basement and we may see some improvements by homecoming. One big improvement will be the installation of a permanent dehumidifier in the basement that drains into the sewer system. There will also be a few landscaping improvements made to the front of the house soon, they are also scheduled to be completed by homecoming. On the activities front, Bob Seeber Jr. recently announced that the Seeber's will continue to sponsor the Robert A. Seeber/Lenny Varner International Pig Roast and we may see a few "enhancements" to the 2010 event. I'll post more details when they are finalized. | February 3, 2009 Epsilon Gamma Housing Corporation UpdateBy Scott Nadeau `89, housing corporation presidentThe Epsilon Gamma Housing Corporation met last Saturday in Farmington Hills at the Law Offices of Jonathan B. Eadie `93. The full minutes of the meeting will be posted on our web site later in the week, but here are a few highlights from the meeting: - The EGHC is facing a few budgetary issues this year as pledged contributions are not coming in like they are supposed to.
- The Chapter is projecting 10-13 occupants in the house next year.
- Pig Roast is April 18th - We would like to incorporate ideas that would maximize family attendance.
- The tentative date for the golf outing is July 11th.
- The silver anniversary anniversary for the chapter in 2010 will be held in conjunction with homecoming or Western weekend.
- Scholarships awarded by the EGHC will now be awarded by the entire EGHC instead of a small committee
- Renovation plans for the basement have changed and will now be less extensive in nature. Work may start as soon as this semester.
- The Chapter presented a proposal for a change in the alcohol policy for the house, mainly dealing with the storage of unopened containers by residents over 21.
In the next few weeks, the EGHC will be discussing the pros and cons of changing the alcohol policy in the house to allow residents of the house who are 21 and over to store a small amount of adult beverages in the house, as well as allowing consumption of alcohol during scheduled alumni events such as homecoming. The discussion will be taking place on-line in a closed discussion group. If any of you are passionate about the topic in one way or another, please feel free to send me well thought out, constructive comments. I'll post your comments in the discussion thread. | November 3, 2008 Wheelchair/Access Ramp for the HouseBy Scott Nadeau, EGHC presidentA few weeks back during homecoming, honorary initiates Norm "Pappy" Andersen and Paul "Bubba" Koehn had the idea to install a wheelchair ramp at the house. Our house has never been accessible for the elderly or disabled and the EGHC has talked about installing a ramp for years. Norm said "We have brothers, alumni, family and friends who can't get in without trouble, and I would like to do something about it." Norm took it upon himself to design, build and install a ramp. The ramp is about 13 feet long and reaches from the sidewalk in the back of the house to the back door with a slope of about 15 degrees. The small deck for the back of the house was modified to accommodate the new ramp.
In addition to donating all of the design time and labor, Paul and Norm are covering almost 1/2 of the costs. The estimated total cost of the project is around $600. The chapter has also given $200. They are asking for help in covering the rest of the costs. If you would like to help Norm and Paul out with the costs, please click on the following link to make a donation: I'll cut a check to Norm for all of the donations that are received from this link.
If you need more information or have questions about the ramp, please feel free to contact Norm here: normsen-at-chartermi.net. (Replace -at- with @) (989) 362-8824 - home or (989) 906-4599 - cell _small.JPG) Click to see larger photos.
| September 1, 2008 Housing Corporation Fall Update & Meeting MinutesBy Scott Nadeau `89, EGHC PresidentThe Epsilon Gamma Housing Corporation met on August 16th in Mt. Pleasant to discuss the budget for the upcoming school year, changes to the house leasing system and to elect new board members and an executive board. Here are a few highlights of the meeting: - We are planning an EG "Family Bowling Night" for sometime in December. The basic premise is to reserve a bunch of lanes and invite everyone to show up with their families. The event will take place somewhere in Southeastern Michigan. More info will come out soon.
- The 25th Anniversary Banquet will take place in the Fall of 2010. We are currently looking into venues. The CMU Rotunda in the UC is one the locations we are seriously considering. The room is only $225 to rent for the evening and the food and adult beverage service is reasonably priced. Attendees would be shuttled from the hotel to the event and back. The reason for choosing this venue ties to the next bullet point.
- A little more than 10 years ago, the Alumni Association set as one of its long-term goals to donate a monument to CMU. That goal has never died. A (perfect) location was suggested to us and we in the early stages of researching the possibility. The monument would showcase important events in the history of the university as well serve as a monument to the Greek System at CMU and to our Chapter. Brother Tom Olver `98 has volunteered to spearhead this effort with the goal of breaking ground on the project the weekend of the 25th Anniversary.
- Some of the people who pledged money to the Capital Fundraising Initiative have not kept up with their pledges causing havoc on the EGHC budget. The rooms that were sponsored by those people will be opened up for new sponsorships in the coming weeks. Jon Eadie `93, Bob Hempton `89 and Jon Coe `91 will be serving on the committee to re-boot the CFI.
- The house will be moving from a 9 1/2 month lease to an 11 1/2 month lease to match other off-campus housing offerings. The house lease rate still will remain very competitive in the market.
In addition to the business discussed, there were a few changes to the board. As you all know, Tom Olver did not renew his term. Phil Klassen `09 was elected to a three year term. Marty Kaiser `01 stepped down from the board for personal reasons. Jeff Wandzel `89 was elected to fulfill the remainder of his term. In addition, both John Coe `91 and Bob Hempton `89 were re-elected to three year terms. The new EGHC E-board is as follows: Scott Nadeau `89 (me) is president, Scott Sawyer `99 remains vice-president, Phil Klassen `09 is our new treasurer and Jon Eadie `93 is our new secretary. Our next open meeting will be on January 31, 2009 with the location to be determined. Photos: | March 9, 2008 EG Housing Corporation Meeting MinutesBy Scott Nadeau `89, EGHC communications directorThe EGHC Corporation met Saturday, February 2, 2008 at the Law Office of Jonathan B. Eadie, `93 in Farmington Hills. It was the largest EGHC meeting that I've attended in a long time. Thanks to everyone that showed up to participate, it was a great meeting! After a thorough update from Colony President Robby Hunter, the board engaged in several discussions involving property management, leasing for 2008-09, summer renovations, finances, activities and our Capital Fundraising Initiative collections process. We also discussed the transition that's going to take place this summer when Tom Olver steps down from his position as president, a position he's held for the past eight years. Here's some noteworthy items from the colony report that may interest everyone: - The colony is working toward getting a getting a Knox Award this summer at convention in addition to the restoration of the charter.
- As of Saturday, the colony had given out 13 bids for Spring recruitment. 12 men have accepted and there's a possibility the more bids will be given out this week. The average pledge class size for any fraternity at CMU during the Spring semester is about 7 or 8 men.
- The colony is working on three philanthropic events for Spring semester.
- The house is on track to hold 9 - 13 members next year, 8 have already signed leases.
- The colony is looking to hold an Alumni/Active get together at a Tigers game this summer. The tentative date for the event is August 30th.
- Eight members from the colony's E-board and cabinet will be attending the Keystone Regional Leadership Conference February 15-17 in Des Moines, Iowa. Chapter Counselor Greg Compton `86 and I will also be making the trip.
